Behind the Music of Christopher Vehmas
Christopher is a pianist, vocalist, and conductor. He is based in North Jersey and is in demand as a collaborative pianist, vocalist and conductor in church, musical theater, and classical settings. He is a passionate music educator with experience throughout all grade levels, and manages a flourishing private studio for both vocal and piano students.
In 2012 Christopher became a member of the Artistic Children’s Chorus at the Metropolitan Opera and has appeared in La Boheme, Andrea Chenier (Roger Alberto), Tosca, Aida, Turandot, and Il Trovatore. He continues to work at the MET as an actor and can currently be seen in La Boheme. As a part of the NJHSA Genesis Chorale, he has travelled all over the world including Costa Rica and South Aftrica, most notably winning both a silver medal and a gold certificate in the 2018 World Choir Games. He has also travelled to Prague, Vienna, and Munich with the Montclair State University Wind Symphony and performed at the WASBE Conference. During the 2023-2024 season he performed Maslanka's 7th symphony with the Wind Symphony. Christopher won 1st place in the Professional Music Teachers of NJ 2019 Junior piano competition. As a vocalist he won 2nd place in the NATS-NYC college classical category in 2021 and has played the role of Papageno with NJ Vocal Arts Collaborative in their production of Die Zauberflöte in 2023. He has recently performed at Carnegie Hall's Weil Hall and Stern Auditorium as both a pianist and vocalist.
Christopher has guest conducted with both the New Jersey and Connecticut Choral Societies and was the conductor of the NJCS CAMERATA for the 2018-2019 season. At the John J. Cali School of Music's 2022-2023 season opening concert, he was given the opportunity to conduct the Montclair State University Singers. He is the musical director for Roundtable theater company as well a music director for StageWorks Theater Company. Christopher has music directed many shows including RENT, Spring Awakening, Rock of Ages, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and American Idiot. He was nominated for a Perry Award for outstanding music direction for Roundtable Theater Company's production of Spring Awakening. He is the Co-Founder of Crossroads Theather Company, a Company based in North Haledon, New Jersey dedicated to providing high quality theater experiences to students.
